B87 PRE-OLPS REUNION
Batch 87 had their pre-OLPS homecoming reunion at Otats house in Suarez Compound, Bibincahan, Sorsogon City. As usual, the classic "Lola Mo" topic and others were a hit. Next meeting will be in Bacon on 12 Oct at Fr. Roy's residence; aside from a get together there, B87 will also get the money Ojee had sent.(pira kaya?)

PDI ‘drama king’: Blogger’s passion hits gold

Inquirer drama critic Gibbs Cadiz has a deep passion for Philippine theater.
How deep? In 1991, in his very first job, he used his first-ever paycheck to buy season tickets to Repertory Philippines.
“The first ticket I bought was for the musical ‘Stop the World, I Want to Get Off,’ at Rep’s Insular Life Theater in Makati,” he remembers.
That abiding passion was recognized last Sunday, in properly dramatic fashion, when Cadiz, a desk editor of Inquirer Lifestyle, became the first arts and culture honoree of the Philippine Blog Awards (PBA). Because the PBA ceremony at One Esplanade had no provision for that most theatrical of traditions, the acceptance speech, Cadiz wrote one and posted it on his blog.
Thrilling to be a fan
In it, he gave thanks to a growing community of readers, but made special mention of “the Filipino Theater Artist, because he/she is what I write about mostly in post after post after post. It is a thrill to be a fan of some of our country’s best talents; it is a privilege to be able to honor their hard work and heroism with this blog.”
In barely two years, his eponymous blog, www.gibbscadiz.blogspot.com, has generated over 140,000 page views; it has also earned the patronage of theater artists themselves. Lea Salonga, for instance, is a regular reader; through the blog, Joanna Ampil in London found out about the auditions in Manila for “West Side Story.”
Industry professionals have also learned to use the blog to spread the word about upcoming plays. After Cadiz encouraged other theater-goers to blog about the plays and even the movies they’ve seen, by giving away tickets or handing out prizes out of his own pocket, theater organizers added the routine to their marketing playbook. Now, through Cadiz’s blog, they give away free tickets, in exchange only for the ticket holders’ commitment to blog about their play-watching experience. (Call it blog ’n play.)
Theater reviews
The core of Cadiz’s blog is the regular theater reviews he has written for the Inquirer since 2005, which he usually posts only after they see print.
But it is an increasingly narrow core, because Cadiz has added more types of posts (a video interview with acclaimed Asian-American playwright David Henry Hwang, for instance) and more features.
“Gibbs Cadiz” is the one place to go on the Internet if one wants to view or hear excerpts from memorable Filipino musical productions, including “Katy,” “Rama at Sita,” “St. Louis Loves Dem Filipinos, the Musical” and “Zsa Zsa Zaturnnah.”
The result, as can be gleaned from the comment threads, traffic statistics and links to other blogs, is a growing community of theater lovers, drawn together by a newspaper editor’s long-running obsession.
Where’s the magic?
That obsession allows Cadiz to wax critical. Last month, for instance, he reviewed three very different plays: “‘Cinderella’ at the CCP Main Theater, ‘Noli at Fili: Dekada 2000 (Dos Mil)’ at the Peta Theater Center, and the recently ended ‘Hinabing Pakpak ng Ating mga Anak’ at the Guerrero Theater in UP Diliman do not qualify as incompetent productions. On the contrary, they evince much thought, planning, care and skillful stagecraft. But that they fall distressingly short of any artistic transcendence is telling. The commitment is there; the magic isn’t.”
But he allows his enthusiasm free rein too. In a review of Tanghalang Ateneo’s “Otelo, ang Moro ng Venecia,” he wrote: “Shakespeare supplies reasons for Iago’s mischief—his thwarted promotion, Othello possibly messing with his wife Emilia—but the way [Rody] Vera mouths them, even he sounds unconvinced by such pretexts.
“Instead, the watchword of his performance is malice—a pure, angst-free peevishness that takes impish delight at his evolving ability to upend lives and bend the truth to his will.
“None of that homoerotic, slithery stuff. This Iago, for all his outward ease and jauntiness, is at heart a misanthrope, and Vera dispenses poison with charismatic exultation.”
Other winners
The other finalists for the Arts and Culture award were “Dalityapi Unpoemed,” “pamatay homesick,” “Perlas Design Studio” and “Pinoy Power.”
Other winners named during the 2nd Philippine Blog Awards included “Pinoy Web Startup” for Business, “Creature Lover” for Commentary, “The Professional Heckler” for Entertainment, “tonyocruz.com” for News and Media, and “Atheista” in the Personal category.

The meeting started at 8:00PM with Atty Cubias presiding. The following concerns were discussed :
1. Tarpaulin Banner (standard size per batch), T-shirt
Totep Perez presented Dondee Delgado’s T – shirt designs. The group selected the plain cream design however with some revisions, viz, logo and motto either in black or green.
Tarpaulin banners will be produced by each batch.
2. Information Dissemination
Totep Perez to furnish Tato Marcial, Tootsie Cubias, Fr. Egay Cleofe copy of invitation letter cum solicitation for rice subsidy project, Atty. Cubias to reproduce letter and obtainMons Pax’s signature, Tato marcial to strategize distribution with the assistance of Fr. Egay.
Totep Perez to produce public service announcements, plugging material or press release.
3. Alumni Directory
Tato Marcial to present available directory next meeting, updating of such must be done prior to homecoming.
4. Confirmation of Attendance to Homecoming
The group projected an estimated 200 pax attendance based on previous homecoming records.
6. Homecoming Activities
Ferdie Marbella represented Batch 83. Totep Perez presented Batch 83’s proposal based on Gerry Arnedo’s email to Mons Pax hereunder stated :
“This is regarding the proposed plans for the homecoming. From the minutes forwarded to our class ( Aug 1, meeting), the following activities/contributions were assigned to batch ’83:
1.) Fellowship ( Oct 17 dinner/fellowship ( food/raffle prizes/band entertainment/lights and sound system)
2) Breakfast/snack/games/ referees/parade snacks/tarpaulins/Mass stipend –estimate is P 45,000
3) The batch early on during the year committed to Fr. Egay Cleofe that we will support the upcoming Sangkan which OLPS is hosting. We committed to the purchase of tables for pingpong, pool, board games, etc.-The batch expects to raise approximately another P 45,000 to P 50,000 for this endeavor.
We were wondering if the following can be an option for the homecoming, because if you consider all of these the cost to Batch ’83 will be rather high ( P 90,000+ already solely for items 2 and 3 only). We have not even accounted for the expenses we will incur for the program we want to have for the fellowship night.
1) raise the registration to P 200 instead of proposal of P50 to help fund for dinner fellowship or
2) we drop item 2 ( open the canteen on a buy your own snacks, and we get referee’s from among the alumni) and use the 45,000 instead to pay for the dinner on the 17th. I am sure the batch will be more than willing to add a little bit more so that there will be enough food for 200pax”
The group adopted option # 2, stated thus :
1. Batch 83 to sponsor Fellowship Night
2. OLPS to open canteen, Alumni to buy snacks or buy their own
3. Alumni to act as referees
Further, the group agreed that :
1. OLPS will provide breakfast on October 18, 2008, Saturday consisting of pan de sal and bottomless coffee.
2. Motorcade instead of parade on same date to cut cost on transport and snacks for Drum and Bugle Corps.
Thus, the following is the revised Homecoming Schedule :
October 17, 2008, Friday
1 PM – Registration (fee still pegged at P50.00 minimum)
3 PM – Motorcade around Sorsogon City
4PM – Games
7 PM – Fellowship Night
October 18, 2008, Saturday
7AM – Breakfast
9 AM – Mass cum General Assembly

7. Other Matters
Totep to remind Joey Cubias to submit documents to Tom Sementela for Financial Statement preparation per requirement for SEC Registration.
Next meeting will be on September 13, 2008, Saturday, 6PM at OLPS. Having no other matters to be discussed, the meeting was adjourned at 9:00 PM.

OLPS Alumni Meeting Update

The meeting started at 8:00PM with Atty Cubias presiding. The following concerns were discussed :
1. Rice Subsidy
A. Totep Perez informed the group that an anonymous donor has signified to Fr. Totep Erestain his intention to donate 1 sack of rice per month.
B. Donors for September are : Joey Cubias, Totep Perez & Tony Deligero
C. Totep Perez read the draft of the pro forma letter on rice subsidy project with reply slip to be distributed to all alumni, together with invitation for homecoming with attached schedule.
2. Tarpaulin Banner (standard size per batch), T-shirt
Totep Perez contacted Dondee Delgado for T – shirt & tarpaulin design, size & cost. The latter however failed to submit said requirements on time for the meeting due to movie project, will submit the same before next meeting.
3. Information Dissemination
With the absence of OLPS Alumni PRO Renato Marcial, the item was declared unfinished business. However, with the new assignment of Mr. Marcial as Sorsogon City’s Fire Marshall, he is designated to lead in the distribution of the letters of invitation to the alumni.
4. Alumni Directory
Again, with the absence of OLPS Alumni PRO Renato Marcial, the item was declared unfinished business. Mr. Perez informed the group that Mr. Marcial made a commitment to pick up the updated alumni directory from Sr. Myrna.
5. Confirmation of Attendance to Homecoming
With the reproduction and distribution of the letter of invitation to alumni still underway, the exact expected number of attendees is still pending.
6. Homecoming Activities
A. No representative from Batch 83 was present during the meeting despite several invitations. However, Mr. Perez made a call to Mr. Ferdie Marbella who informed him that their Batch is still ironing out things. They committed to attend next meeting.
B. Atty. Cubias informed the group that the proposed basketball game with St. Gregory alumni may not push through due to Ibalong activities.
C. Mr. Lloyd Lopez informed the group that the seminarians are suggesting for a basketball match with the OLPS alumni.
7. Other Matters
A. SEC Registration – pending the submission of the FS, Tom Sementela, Joey Cubias & Atty. Cubias as point persons.
B. Alumni Affairs Office – Mr. Perez already drafted the letter to Fr. Egay Cleofe with Msgr. Pax Monje as signatory, will submit the same to the latter for his approval.
Next meeting will be on September 5, 2008, Friday 6PM at OLPS. Having no other matters to be discussed, the meeting was adjourned at 9:00 PM.

A. Ceremonial turnover of initial 3 sacks of rice donation was done by the Alumni with the presence of minor seminarians and formators. Donors were Robert Maullon, Ceazar Escobedo and Bernie Donor (n.b. Joey Cubias to donate 1 sack on September 2008)
B. Other Pledges for Rice Subsidy Project are the following :

Again, with the absence of OLPS Alumni PRO Renato Marcial, the item was declared unfinished business. Totep Perez to notify him on the unfinished businesses.
5. Confirmation of Attendance to Homecoming
All attendees in the meeting are appointed point persons for their batch. Invitation letters will be coursed through to batch coordinators.
6. Homecoming Activities
A. The group confirmed the proposed program of activities with no amendments as of yet. The alumni request the confirmation of batch 83 for their commitment to sponsor the Alumni Homecoming and shoulder the expenses. Totep is tasked to contact Batch 83.
B. Atty. Cubias suggested to explore possibility on having basketball match with St. Gregory Seminary Alumni. Atty. Cubias to coordinate including the preparation of plaque or trophy. Ceazar Escobedo and Tony Detera to form the team and act as coaches.
7. Other Matters
A. SEC Registration – pending the submission of the FS, Tom Sementela, Joey Cubias & Atty. Cubias as point persons.
B. Alumni Affairs Office – pending the draft of official letter to OLPS Rector c/o Totep, Msgr. Monje as signatory.

Meeting Proper
The meeting started at 8:30PM with Msgr. Monje presiding. The following concerns were discussed :
1. Tarpaulin Banner (standard size per batch), T-shirt
Alumni Foundation will finance production/printing of tarpaulin banners & t- shirts, the batches will pay during homecoming. Batch 87 as parade committee/secretariat is tasked to determine number of pieces to produce and cost.
A good quality t - shirt with collar (color – cream or light yellow) and embroidered with OLPS logo (color – black) will be produced as official alumni t-shirt. (Note : An unresolved discussion came up that for income generating purposes, these t-shirts may be considered for sale to non - alumni as souvenir item but at a higher prize.)
2. Information Dissemination
It was suggested that the Information, Documentation, Publication Committee must meet A.S.A.P. to strategize. Mr. Robert Maullon was tasked to coordinate. Mr. Renato Marcial was appointed as Alumni PRO.
3. Alumni Directory
Mr. Marcial already coordinated with Sr. Myrna Dioquino who informed him that the Alumni list is complete and ready for pick up anytime.
4. Confirmation of Attendance to Homecoming
Appoint point person/coordinator per batch is wiling to volunteer. Communication exchange will be done through blogspot postings and text messaging.

Minutes of the OLPS Alumni Meeting

Meeting Proper
The meeting was called to order at 8 PM with Atty. Jess Fumera presiding. Mr. Totep Perez read the minutes of the previous meeting. The body approved the contents of the minutes of the meeting.
Atty. Fumera led the group in the discussion of the matters arising from the previous meeting:
1. On Rice subsidy :
Mr. Tato Marcial reported that 10 seminarians are having difficulty in complying with the required 3 sacks of rice yearly, thus, a shortfall of 30 sacks in the year.
Fr. Egay Cleofe informed the group that he will provide names of those seminarians and inquired if they will become direct beneficiaries of the Alumni Foundation and in effect, they are no longer obliged to give the required sacks of rice. The group discussed on the matter and arrived at the decision that the OLPS is the sole beneficiary of the Alumni Foundation who will receive directly the rice subsidy. It is now the discretion of the OLPS administration if they will still require the 10 seminarians to give rice.
Mr. Bernie Donor informed the group that per sack costs P1,250 per sack or P25 per kilo, thus a total of P37,500.00 for 30 sacks of rice shortfall. It was suggested that the Alumni Foundation will write letter to NFA Manager to purchase rice, Totep to draft the letter, Monsignor Monje to sign. The source of fund will come from donations from alumni, post the information at alumni blogspots.
2. On Financial Statement :
Mr. Joey Cubias, the Alumni Treasurer was absent. Mr Tom Sementela suggested that Mr. Perez must remind Mr. Cubias to submit the records of transactions for him to prepare the Financial Statement.
3. On General Information Sheet :
Atty. Tootsie Cubias was absent, again, Mr. perez was tasked to remind Atty. Cubias to submit the General Information Sheet.
4. On Alumni Directory :
Mr. Marcial to coordinate with the Registrar Mam Nikki Halcon, Sr. Myrna Dioquino & Atty. Cubias.
5. On Fellowship Night:
Mr. Perez reported that he met Atty. Alwin Talde who informed him that Batch 83 had a meeting in Manila to discuss their sponsorship of the event by shouldering the financial cost and possible production of Film Documentary about OLPS c/o Film maker Larry Manda.
6. On Destroyed Fence :
Mr. Marcial took picture of the damaged portion and posted the same on the blog. However, Fr. Cleofe informed the group that there is a plan to construct an access road in the same area. Atty. Fortes suggested that the group must remove the item from the Alumni’s concern based on the aforementioned plan. The group agreed.
7. On Tarpaulin Banners :
The group decided to put the item for further discussion next meeting.
8. On Establishment of Alumni Affairs Office :
Mr. Perez informed Fr. Cleofe on the rationale behind the establishment of an Alumni Affairs Ofice. Fr. Cleofe said that seminarians are capable to be assigned, for the meantime at the alumni desk that will soon be transformed into an office. Mr perez will draft a formal letter of request to the Rector, Msgr. Monje to sign & discuss details with Fr. Cleofe, the Rector.

Buhay (working) turista

I'VE NEVER TRAVELLED outside the country for pure R&R. My trips so far have always been working ones, with work invariably carving a big chunk of time away from the sightseeing. The sightseeing, in fact, is still partly work. I'm there not primarily to enjoy the scenery or the vibe, but to keep my eyes open for a good story--something, anything worth writing about for the travel section of the paper.
The bulk of “tourist” pictures in my camera thus tend to be images in potential service to my story--pictures not for remembering the trip, but for illustrating, highlighting or emphasizing details of the narrative that I'm trying to form in my head as I click away. That means, almost always, that I'm not in the frame. Which is all right by me, since I'm not the type anyway who runs to pose before every bush, bust or garden on foreign soil. A few souvenir shots, and I'm fine.
In Zaragoza, I ended up with almost 400 photos. Here are the unlucky few that had me as a subject--mostly taken on the one day we had to tour the city. The rest of the more scenic “story” pictures will have to wait until after I've written my travel piece for the paper. Where to start, where to start...
At the Zaragoza Expo grounds before an ultra-modern building called the Congress Palace, where the Philippine National Day celebrations were held. The Expo campus is friggin' huge; crossing it from end to end is to invite heatstroke, mangled shoes and an oily face. But sige lang--for love of country, woohoo!
Walking towards the old center of the city at the start of our day-long tour. Temperature: 36 degrees. Zaragoza in summer is almost desert-like--blistering hot by day, biting-cold at night and (especially) early morning.
At the Plaza de los Catedrales, a vast square bounded on three sides by three majestic churches and on the fourth by a swanky shopping thoroughfare. The church behind me is the Basilica of the Virgin of the Pillar, patron saint of Spain, the interiors of which are jaw-droppingly opulent (domes painted by Goya!). No pictures allowed as usual, though. The church is so big that a mass can be ongoing at the lavishly gilded central nave while clumps of tourists still roam and gawk at the rest of the building. Ang init talaga sa labas, leche. (Ooops, perdone!)
Drinking from a public fountain to stave off midday thirst. I wasn't being reckless here. Since Zaragoza is hosting an international expo focusing on water and sustainable development, it made sure its taps carried potable water. Even the hotel faucets were for drinking, so for the first time in my five years of occasional travels, I drank straight from the tap and didn't have to buy bottled water. Dapat lang, because spending in Euro was dang expensive!
The Calle Alfonso Primero, running straight out of the Basilica del Pilar courtyard, is a fetching pedestrian thoroughfare lined with upscale shops and food stops on both sides. Looks empty, right? That's because we were there at around 2:30 p.m., which is sacred siesta time for the Spanish, when most establishments close and don't reopen until 5 p.m. Also, at this time of year, the sun doesn't set until 10 p.m., the usual dinner time. We Pinoy visitors, used to early suppers, had to make do with heavy snacks in between to make sure we didn't go mad with hunger before that ungodly meal hour.
A Zaragoza treasure--the 11th-century Al Jaferia palace, built by Moorish kings, improved by Catholic monarchs when they reconquered the city, and now restored to breathtaking splendor as a UNESCO World Heritage site. A section of the fortress used to hold prisoners of the Inquisition; you can still see the markings on the cell walls made by a hapless prisoner or two. The Mudejar (Spanish-Moorish) interiors of lovely gardens and intricately ornamented architecture are very well-preserved. Our Spanish guide was young, good-looking--and sweating buckets as he wrestled with his English spiels. Aww, I wanted to offer my services as a tutor (evil grin).
The working tourist with the oversize fisherman's hat aiming his camera at anything and everything--baka sakali magamit. Bless you, whoever you are that invented the memory card.
