Reminiscing Tata Lines

(I am posting herewith, the letter of fr. vic sent to me via e-mail, rb_marcial@yahoo.com)

mga pads,

here are the pictures taken last oct12, sa lamay ni +tatalines, at the Home for the Clergy where his remains lies, during which, batch 87 accidently met without that planned communication.. sadyang pinagtagpo ang batch87. kita pa!

please pray for the eternal repose of Fr. Lino. He died last Oct10, in the afternoon, of car accident (he was driving his brand new black chevrolet), along villa hermosa route when he was coming back from legazpi. What really happened that caused his car to rump head on to a tree is a cause of many speculations.. sabi kan iba inatake sa puso, others would say nangaturog siya while driving. He's a diabetic kaya posible nangaturog siya.

for fr. Henry, tato, ian, garry, glenn, gibbs, he was our Captain, the best literary professor we ever had. remember "o captain, my captain" a poem by walt whitman na tinuro sa aton ni tatalines? Remember Dead Poets Society? Si Robin Williams na english profesor? This poem reminds me of tatalines.. if you can still remember the poem.. somehow it speaks of tatalines..

see:

O Captain! My Captain!
by Walt Whitman

O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done, The ship has weather'd every rack, the prize we sought is won, The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting, While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring; But O heart! heart! heart! O
the bleeding drops of red, Where on the deck my Captain lies, Fallen cold and dead. O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells; Rise up- for you the flag is flung- for you the bugle trills, For you bouquets and ribbon'd wreaths- for you the shores a-crowding, For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning; Here Captain! dear father! This arm beneath your head! It is some dream that on the deck, You've fallen cold and dead. My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still, My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will, The ship is anchor'd safe and sound, its voyage closed and done, From fearful trip the victor ship comes in with object won; Exult O shores,
and ring O bells! But I with mournful tread, Walk the deck my Captain lies, Fallen cold and dead.

somehow for me, it is for tatalines..

PRAY FOR HIS SOUL!

Latob in Tata Linuz

The most memorable experience I had with Tata Linuz happened during one of the "modelling" sessions we had when i was in first year college.

For those who studied at OLPS College and took up English Composition Subject with Tata Linuz, modelling was his endearing legacy of teaching the English Language by demonstrating to us excerpts on the works of great writers that we must use as "models" to write our own compositions.

In one of our classes with him he jokingly warned me : "Mr. Perez, remember that I am a lawyer, I can sue you for destroying my eyesight, you've got a terrible handwriting!"

But I was so glad I never got a "latob" or "banggurang" from him, his "punishment/karinyo" to his students for every mispronounced word, wrong grammar and spelling... Without warning he says "latubon/banggurangon ta ika," (pero linatob/binanggurang ka na niya bag - o ka pa man sabihan.)

He was the only seminary mentor who's too eager to start the class immediately by beginning to lead the opening prayer as soon as he enters the classroom while we are still rising up from our seats to do the sign of the cross. By the time he reaches the teacher's table, the opening prayer was already done and he's ready to start the class right away.

Lsst October 2005 during the Alumni homecoming, I really intended to talk to him during the solidarity night to express my gratitude to him in teaching us the English language effectively. I was exempted by the Ford Foundation International to take the Intensive English Course for the pre - academic traning of their fellows - elect. I thanked him for his efforts were not in vain.

In between his smile and chuckles he quipped : "You see Totep, it pays really! Now you understand why I was strict then.."

Tata Linuz, thank you for your modelling...na may kaupod na latob nan banggurang.

(note: may I invite everybody to post their memories on Tata Linuz, and maybe we can compile these as a tribute to one great mentor who inspired us to write and create our own writing styles.)

Appeal to Help Sorsogon

Mga Ka - Batch, mga SANO,

May I suggest to all batches and the OLPS Alumni Foundation to organise, pool resources and extend any form of assistance to Sorsogon which is severely hit by Milenyo...

Maybe we can utilize the alumni homecoming this October to formalize whatever plans for this effort.... I guess, it's quite not advisable to have the usual activities that we do during reunions, instead, let's make the event an opportunity to help our kababayans...

We have so many SANOs who are blessed with resources, connections/network, well placed in bureaucracy and private sector, etc.... may I suggest to them to spearhed this kind of activity...

How I wish I can go home and help.... Calling also those SANOs who are living abroad to try to be involved in any initiatives being done in their area to help our kababayans....

Burugkos Burulig kita Para sa Sorsogon....Dios Mabalos!
